Kibou: The Original Fanny Pack Diaper Bag

Why does Kibou cost $89 instead of $29?

To put it frankly, you could not produce and sell a Kibou for $29 unless you significantly cut the cost or quality of materials and labor. In other words, if you as the customer are not paying, then someone else is.

To understand the price of sustainable goods, it’s helpful to understand the many expenses that go into getting a product from raw materials to usable item in your life:

1. Raw materials

    • For Kibou these include: the most durable vegan leather, nylon, smooth high quality zippers foam padding, premium metal loops and hooks, weight-bearing ergonomic plastic buckle and nylon belt

2. Labor

    • At Kibou we're committed to skilled workers--who are paid living wages with sustainable work hours--to create each Kibou on sewing machines using a complex 26-piece pattern.

3. Packaging

    • This includes high quality, reusable nylon zipper dust bag, protective materials for transport and a mailer to your door.

4. Transportation

    • From Truck→ Boat→ Truck and then truck or plane to your door.

Beyond these expenses, it is costly to lab test every single material we use to ensure they are safe for use with baby and comply with California Prop-65 regulations. And then of course there are everyday business costs to operate digitally and to take good care of our customers by having a strong, committed team.

While Kibou is a lean organization, we have a fulfillment team to get all orders out in 2 business days (or less!), a customer service assistant, and two brilliant marketing freelancers. Plus, Stephanie and I work around the clock on Kibou--with every dollar that we’ve made being reinvested into the company.

Our only other investment is in supporting our larger community. It has been core to our mission to give back to mothers and children in need since day one. So when you buy from Kibou, you too are lending a hand. Every day of the year we give 1% of every sale to our charitable partner Hour Children, and on days like Giving Tuesday we give 10%.

And of course, Kibou and our continually evolving line of products wasn’t born overnight. It took us two full years of researching, designing, testing and tweaking to bring Kibou as you know it to market. And when you give us feedback on your experience with your Kibou, we make changes and improvements to existing products.

We develop new products to meet your growing needs. And because we do this from scratch, it takes time and money. We do not copy other brands’ designs. We do not replicate, we innovate. And we couldn’t have done it without you all--our amazing community of Kibou parents who share your highs and lows, who provide feedback and ideas, and stay in touch throughout your journey.

Thank you so much for keeping us by your side.
